Men, women, and children have gathered in South Africa to show their support for Nelson Mandela, who's currently in critical condition at a hospital in Pretoria. Over the weekend, President Obama and First Lady Michelle met with Mandela's family at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Johannesburg, and Obama later released a statement. "I expressed my hope that Madiba draws peace and comfort from the time that he is spending with loved ones, and also expressed my heartfelt support for the entire family as they work through this difficult time," he said. "I also reaffirmed the profound impact that his legacy has had in building a free South Africa, and in inspiring people around the world - including me. That's a legacy that we must all honor in our own lives, including this July on Mandela Day."
The former South African president has been an international inspiration for several decades, offering words of wisdom on everything from freedom to family to self-improvement over the years. Outside the hospital, there are gifts, signs, and letters that have been left for Mandela, and crowds have flocked to the area to sing and cheer for the former world leader. Take a look at these touching pictures of Mandela supporters in South Africa.
