The countdown to the end of the world is ON, people.
We’re one year away from December 21, 2012, the date that the ancient Mayan Long Count calendar allegedly marked as the end of the world and humanity as we know it.
But will it? Guess we'll find out in 365 days.
There have been many such proclamations - Christian radio guy Harold Camping botched two this year alone - but the Mayan prophecy seems to have the most clout.
The Mayan civilization, which reached its height from 300 A.D. to 900 A.D., had a talent for astronomy, as advanced mathematics and primitive astronomy flourished.
After creating allegedly the world's most accurate calendar, the Mayans predicted the world's end, marked by a solar shift, a Venus transit, violent earthquakes, etc.
Their Long Count calendar begins in 3,114 B.C., marking time in roughly 394-year periods known as Baktuns. The 13th, and FINAL, Baktun ends December 21, 2012.
Basically, we are beyond f*%ked. You heard it here. Enjoy your final Baktun, become a fan of THG on Facebook and help us break a million followers by that date!
