Rise Again

It took me some time to get into the swing of things yesterday but I managed to get my sleep schedule back on track. David and I went out to see The Dark Knight Rises yesterday evening … it was his first time, my second. He loved and raved about the film afterward and I really enjoyed it the second time around. Because our movie got out late, we decided to just come home and chill … so I decided to go back and watch the original 1989 Batman film directed by Tim Burton. Yes, it was a Bat-filled day of fun for me.

I’m not sure if this is feasible for many of you but I really benefitted from seeing TDKR for a second time. There were things that I missed or couldn’t understand the first time (particularly from Bane) that I caught the second time. Surprisingly, the movie seemed to fly by the second time for me … despite it’s 2 hour and 45 minute runtime. I don’t think I’ll see it again, tho … I’m getting too old for that kind of stuff. BUT back in 1989, I saw the first Batman film 8 times … and the sequel Batman Returns well over a dozen times (tho, back then, many of my repeat visits were to Dollar Show screenings a couple of months after the film had been released).

And speaking of Batman, I decided to give the old “classic” another viewing last night:

Say what you will about the brilliance of Christopher Nolan‘s Batman films, but Tim Burton‘s films are untouchable to me. Where Nolan succeeds in making the comic book world of Batman realistic, Burton succeeds in making the comic book world of Batman come to life in all it’s over-the-top and very campy glory. I am a big fan of realism, yes, but something about the marginally ridiculousness of comic book movies just really resonates with me. As kids, we love comic books because of the colored pages, the outlandish behavior and the silly, almost unbelievable feats of action. Tim Burton did an EXCELLENT job making that world come to life. Jack Nicholson‘s Joker is such an icon of pop culture, he will always be remembered for that part. Honestly, the sequel Batman Returns is even more impressive in it’s ability to transcend from comic book pages to the big screen. The Tim Burton films are genius … just, genius. I didn’t have time last night but I plan on watching Batman Returns soon so I can revel in the brilliance of Michelle Pfeiffer‘s Catwoman performance :)

Today … I have to run. I need to make up the 7 mile run I missed yesterday morning. Maybe I’ll run farther, maybe not but … I’ll be running at some point. Wish me luck.

Happy Sunday!
