Sherman Hemsley Passes Away At 74

Sad news to pass along for classic TV fans. Sherman Hemsley, the man who played George Jefferson on All In The Family and The Jeffersons in the late 70′s/early 80′s and who played Deacon Ernest Frye on Amen in the 90′s, has passed away. At this point, no cause of death has been made known but authorities in El Paso, TX (where he lived) have confirmed his death. While many of you younger readers may not be at all familiar with Hemsley‘s work, I can assure you that the world has suffered a great loss.

Sherman Hemsley, the actor who made the character George Jefferson famous in “The Jeffersons,” has died, El Paso cops tell TMZ. Hemsley died at his home in El Paso, Texas. Hemsley, who was 74, became famous during his appearances on “All in the Family.” The spin-off, “The Jeffersons” was a monster hit. He also starred in the TV show, “Amen.” He was also a professional singer and even released the single in 1989, “Ain’t that A Kick in the Head.” Hemsley had no wife and no kids. It’s unclear how he died.

Wow, this is just really sad news. I was a big fan of The Jeffersons when I was very young and I loved Amen. Before The Cosby Show became a hit TV series, The Jeffersons was one of the biggest TV shows to feature an African American family. As you may know, the focus of The Jeffersons focused on a family that was able to work their way up to the top, to a deluxe apartment in the sky, because of their hard work. They really don’t make TV shows like that any more. Sherman Hemsley was one of those comedic actors who made the job look easy. As far as I know, Hemsley was known for his professionalism and for the most part, lived a very quiet life. I’m very saddened to learn that Hemsley never married or had children, it seems tragic that he may have died alone. I hope his passing was a peaceful one. I know he will be missed.
